Victoria Raish is an online learning librarian at Pennsylvania State University. Victoria has been a member of ACRL for 3 years and is your ACRL member of the week for July 22, 2019.
Describe yourself in three words: Driven, motivated, strategic.
What are you reading (or listening to on your mobile device(s)? I am reading The Girl Who Smiled Beads. This is the book World Campus is using for their summer book club and I am creating the discussion questions.
Describe ACRL in three words: Welcoming, supportive, inclusive.
What do you value about ACRL? What I value most about ACRL is the vast amount of opportunities that exist for getting involved. I have been able to take leadership positions on some committees and simply sit on the periphery in others. There is a place for many different interests and groups important to libraries and if one does not exist, there is the potential to create one.
What do you as an academic librarian contribute to your campus? I am the librarian dedicated towards thinking about our online students and other stakeholders. Penn State has a very large World Campus but we also have other online learning occurring. I collaborate with my colleagues both within and outside of the library to make a difference in the educational experience of students. As an example, today I collaborated with a creative director for English and with a colleague in the library to integrate information literacy digital badges into an online course.
In your own words: I never thought I would be an academic librarian, I don’t even have my MLIS! However, since I was hired as a graduate assistant within the library I have had a desire to work as a librarian. I enjoy my time at Penn State as publishing is also a valued endeavor and I can apply many of the skills and knowledge I gained as a Ph.D. student into my work as a librarian. The library should be an integral part of every student’s collegiate experience, whether they are living in a dorm or serving our country. I am honored to work in a role where I get to make a difference for online students.
