Tenure-Track Positions: Could I Survive? Could I Thrive? (Online Presentation)

This online presentation will be comprised of several sections, based on major categories of questions that the three presenters frequently discuss with MLS candidates and early-career librarians through their work. Sections include:

  • General requirements of tenure-track positions
  • Life on the tenure track: at work and at home
  • Tenure as part of a career path
  • Strategies for succeeding with tenure: partnerships, supports, and planning ahead
  • Alternatives to tenure-track positions: researching off the tenure track
  • Tenure myths, phobias, and truths: what new and potential tenure-track librarians like to ask us
  • Q&A

Presenters for this program are:

Karen Sobel, Associate Professor/Teaching and Learning Librarian (Fine Arts and Architecture) at the University of Colorado Denver, works as a tenured librarian, and performs extensive mentoring of tenure-track faculty and training of new mentors for faculty across her university.

Gene Springs, Assistant Professor/Collections Strategist at The Ohio State University’s libraries, has held several tenure-track positions at universities around the United States, and currently holds a tenure-track leadership position.

Dr. Barbara B. Moran, Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Information and Library Science, brings over thirty years’ experience as an advisor and mentor to MLS candidates seeking their first jobs, and as a professor of library and information science.

This event will be moderated by Laura Gariepy, Chair of the ACRL ULS Professional Development Committee and is sponsored by the ACRL ULS Professional Development Committee.
