Business Librarian
How long have you been a member of ULS?
I have been a member of ULS for 21 years. This was one of the sections that my colleagues advised me to join when I finished library school.
What or who inspires your work?
The students are an inspiration and the reason why I show up for work each day. Overall, they are great kids. They come in with ideas for things that you would not think possible and this helps keep me sharp because I must look for information to help them with these ideas.
What most excites you about academic librarianship?
I am amazed at the changes in academic librarianship over the years. The resources we have to work with and
the amount of information available. What we need to teach students to be successful and competitive, the skills
that I need as an academic librarian – I am doing things that 20 years ago, I would never have thought of and it
is all so exciting. We hired our first Digital Scholarship librarian and I thought as a Business Librarian, we
would never use digital scholarship in business. But this year, we have done workshops in Social Media use
and taught students and faculty digital scholarship skills that could make them very competitive in the
workforce. I guess that is what’s exciting about academic librarianship – the rate of change and the new areas
which become important to us.
What exciting or interesting project are you working on right now?
We have been doing several digital scholarship projects with faculty and students in the business school. We
had one this spring on using social media to measure consumer sentiment. Here at the end of the semester, I am
presenting Nvivo to some of the MIS faculty who are working on a project with our School of Nursing. The
project seals with bringing healthcare to certain groups in India. This has been a very exciting project to work
on due to the global scope. We will also be working over the summer on a virtual Adam Smith timeline project.
What do you do for fun?
When I am not at the library, I like to cross stitch. I also like to work in my garden – it’s just a small garden
but is a lot of fun. I made the leap this spring and got 2 chickens who live in our backyard. We have a coop for
them and hope to get eggs in return for their room and board! And of course, I enjoy reading. I discovered
Anne Perry last year and Love the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt mysteries.
