Join us for a webinar introducing augmented reality for and by librarians. It has been gaining increasing popularity among major conferences, both on-site one and those online. Engineering and Data Services Librarian Samuel Dyal will be giving a foundational presentation on what augmented reality is, how people are using it and plan to use it. Research & Instruction Librarian Dina Meky will compare 4-5 related applications. Library Director Bill McNelis and Student Success Librarian Samantha Kannegiser will present the specific orientation that was created with augmented reality, with an emphasis on HP Reveal.
About the Presenters
Samuel Dyal graduated with a MLS from the University of North Texas in 2011, and since 2014 has served as an Engineering and Data Services Librarian at Arizona State University. Samuel loves working with new technology and learning about different ways in which technological tools can improve the work librarians do as well as the library patron experience.
Dina Meky is a Reference and Instruction Librarian at Berkeley College. She also serves as an adjunct Instructor Librarian at Rider University. Prior to that, she worked for Syracuse University Libraries and the American University in Cairo. She is a 2013-2014 ALA Spectrum Scholar, and a 2016-2017 NJLA Emerging Leader. Dina has presented at conferences and workshops on her work on diversity in librarianship, outreach and advocacy in information literacy, and digital pedagogy.
Bill McNelis is the Library Director for the two campus libraries of the Berkeley College New York City campus. Bill is also the information literacy liaison for the Fashion program faculty, and serves on the library system’s technology and electronic resources committees. With a strong interest in creating engagement with students who do not identify as library users, Bill has created activities and initiatives to connect with students using scavenger hunts, augmented reality, and events outside traditional library spaces. Bill has presented with colleagues on these initiatives at professional conferences to share lessons learned and best practices, and to seek input on future improvements and programs.
Samantha Kannegiser is a Student Success Librarian for Rutgers University-Camden. Prior to that, she served as a Research and Instruction Librarian for Berkeley College. Her current research interests center on ways technology can improve reference and instruction to better meet students’ needs. Samantha has presented at conferences and workshops on her work researching information literacy instruction in virtual reference and the use of augmented reality for library outreach and instruction.
