Capturing Evidence of Learning at the Reference Desk
Rick Stoddart – University of Idaho
To put it simply, we are what we measure. If libraries measure books, then libraries are about books. If libraries measure learning, than libraries are about learning. One area in libraries that offers a significant learning opportunity with patrons is the reference desk. Libraries often gather data about these interactions and traditionally categorize these transactions by question type, time spent answering the question, and time of day. Unfortunately, these traditional measures do little to connect to the learning aspect that may occur during these reference encounters. This talk will report about a project to better align reference transaction data to campus learning outcomes and how this evidence is used inform the overall narrative of the library’s impact on student learning.
Building Evidence-Based Digital Scholarship Services at the University of Colorado Boulder
Alexander Watkins, Thea Lindquist, Nickoal Eichmann
In 2013, the Digital Humanities Task Force at the University of Colorado Boulder was charged with investigating and reporting on digital humanities activities and needs on campus and formulating evidence-based recommendations for how the Libraries might partner with other campus units to provide support. The task force took a multimodal approach to this work, employing environmental scans, surveys, interviews, and other techniques to gather the richest possible data set upon which to base its analysis. Four years later we reflect on the impact of our work and how it has shaped the current state of digital scholarship services at CU Boulder.
