A Day in the Life of a Digital Scholarship Intern

Over the past year, the Roux Library Technical Services Department at Florida Southern College has partnered with San José State University’s (SJSU) iSchool to provide a virtual Digital Scholarship Internship to students enrolled in the Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) graduate program. Under the supervision of the Metadata Librarian, the Digital Scholarship interns gained experience in the skills of digital scholarship, specifically as it relates to supporting faculty and students in using digital tools to organize, share, and publish their research. During their internship, the interns produced metadata records for the institutional repository, and explored the capabilities of digital humanities tools such as ArcGIS StoryMaps, Timeline JS, and Omeka. The graduate interns also developed a Digital Scholarship LibGuides covering the scholarly communications process, created training materials and workflows, and identified new tools applicable in Technical Services, such as data visualization tools, map, and timeline tools.
This presentation by current and former graduate students who participated in the Digital Scholarship Internship and their mentor will discuss the intern experience, including how students in MLIS programs can augment their studies by participating in virtual internships so that they can explore career options, build hands-on technical skills, and make professional connections. Our hope is that more institutions provide internship opportunities to graduate students who are exploring career options, want to gain valuable new skills, and are interested in expanding professional connections.

Marina Morgan, Florida Southern College: Marina Morgan is the Florida Library Association (FLA) Secretary and Chair of the FLA Career Development Subcommittee. She is also the Senior Metadata Librarian at Roux Library, Florida Southern College. In her role, she supervises the Technical Services operations, develops procedures for processing all library materials, serves as the ILS and the ProQuest ETD administrator, manages the Institutional Repository, and co-manages the Digital Collections. She enjoys supervising and hosting graduate students from the San Jose State University School of Information during their virtual internship at Florida Southern College.
Christopher Paintner, California State University Chico, Staff: Chris has an M.A. (2019) in History from California State University, Chico (CSU, Chico) and an MLIS from San Jose State University (2022). Chris was hired as the Digital Collections and Thesis Remediation specialist at CSU, Chico in March of 2022, shortly after finishing his internship at Florida Southern College. He creates and updates metadata for works in the institutional repository and manages content remediation for compliance with ADA requirements.
Viviana Cois, Los Gatos Library, Staff: Viviana received her MLIS from San Jose State University in 2022. She currently works at the Los Gatos Library where she responds to queries at the reference desk, assists in the cataloging of new materials, and runs the weekly ESL Conversation Club. Before working in a library, Viviana worked in higher education as an administrator and language instructor.
Lindsay Call, University of Redlands, Staff: Lindsay is graduating from San Jose State University with her MLIS in just a few short weeks. She currently works as a staff member in Access Services the University of Redlands’ Armacost Library and recently began another new role inventorying and cataloging materials for a private southern California law firm.
Gabrielle Visco, Student, San Jose State University: Gabrielle graduated from San Jose State University’s School of Information, December 2022. During their MLIS program, Gabrielle was able to take three internships that enriched their school experience and gave them invaluable hands-on practice. Gabrielle hopes to land an academic librarian position. Gabrielle accepted a volunteer role with the ALA this year (2023-2026) and looks forward to contributing to the LIS community.
Jamie Wyman, Rancho Cucamonga Library Services: Jamie is also graduating from San Jose State University with her MLIS in a few weeks. She is the Collection Development Librarian at the Rancho Cucamonga Public Libraries, helping to manage the library’s collection and making materials accessible to the community through cataloging, acquisitions, marketing, database management, and reference services.
