A Message from the LES Chair

February 3rd, 2017

Dear LES Community,

Many of you have seen the statements from ALA and ACRL reaffirming our core values in the face of recent acts by the new presidential administration:

http://www.ala.org/news/press-releases/2017/01/ala-opposes-new-administration-policies-contradict-core-values

ACRL Board of Directors Affirms Commitment to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Access

(John Overholt, CoChair of RMBS, has collected additional statements from around the profession: https://medium.com/@john_overholt/the-profession-responds-32388f79430a#.1hxngqebi)

I don’t think there’s a need for LES to generate its own statement — but I will say, as your chair, that I don’t think these statements go far enough. The past two weeks have demonstrated to me that this administration represents an affront to everything I stand for as a librarian and as a human being. I can no longer separate my politics from my professional work and I will fight for what I believe in – social justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and intellectual freedom – by any means possible and necessary.

I speak for myself, and not for the section; but I hope that we can all work together to uphold, affirm, and extend our core values. I welcome your feedback and suggestions as to how we can move forward.

Best regards,
Laura Braunstein
Chair, ACRL Literatures in English Section

Submissions for Biblio-Notes due April 17th

February 3rd, 2017

This is a call for submissions for the upcoming issue of Biblio-Notes, the LES section of ACRL’s newsletter.

Ideas for Biblio-Notes articles can include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

• Are you implementing the changes made in the 8th ed. of the MLA Handbook into your library instruction?

• How have recent efforts by certain colleges and universities to become “sanctuary campuses” informed your library’s practices?

• Did you attend ALA Midwinter in Atlanta? Did you attend the MLA Convention in Philadelphia?

• Are you engaged in an innovative project related to LES at your library?

• Were you recently hired, promoted, published, tenured, or otherwise excellent? Your fellow LES members want to know.

Please send your submissions for the Spring 2017 issue in .doc, .docx, .odt, or .rtf format to Brian Flota (flotabc@jmu.edu) by the end of the day on Monday, April 17th.

Biblio-Notes is a newsletter. Brief articles in the 250-1000 word range are ideal. If you have any ideas for an article or other relevant content, feel free to let us know.
