C&RL News – December 2012

C&RL News - December 2012The December 2012 issue of C&RL News is now freely available online. The research projects academic and research librarians undertake to improve their libraries can sometimes have unintended benefits. Andrea A. Wirth and Margaret Mellinger discuss how a study at Oregon State University helped librarians develop a water resources research guide in their article “Improving subject guides with existing citation analyses data.”

In our continuing focus on collaborations in librarianship, project partners from the University of Michigan and the Ann Arbor Public Schools discuss how they worked together to improve the information literacy skills of high school students in a public health course. John J. Meier of Penn State University examines “Science graphic novels for academic libraries” and shares a conversation with researcher and science cartoonist Jay Hosler.

In this month’s Scholarly Communication column, Kathleen Fitzpatrick of the Modern Language Association discusses “Openness, value, and scholarly societies.” Pete McDonnell provides timely advice for getting in touch with “The inner librarian” in his The Way I See It Essay.

This issue marks the final Preservation News column authored by Jane Hedberg. Jane is retiring from her position at Harvard University and leaving C&RL News, as well. On behalf of ACRL and the C&RL News readership, I would like to thank Jane for her more than 20 years of keeping us up-to-date on the world of preservation. It has been a pleasure to work with her, and her work will be greatly missed.

Make sure to check out all of the other features and departments in this month’s issue, including a revision of the Joint Statement on Faculty Status of College and University Librarians, brief information on ACRL activities at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Seattle, and the call for volunteers for association committees and editorial boards. We also take a look back at the accomplishments of your association this month with the 2011–12 ACRL Annual Report.
