WiFi at McCormick Place

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

From ALA:

ALA is paying for WiFi at McCormick Place during the ALA Conference. So it will be available at no charge in the public areas and meeting rooms in the building and the Hyatt Conference Center (not complimentary at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place Hotel, however).

As WiFi systems are not as reliable as wired we received this message from the building you might want to pass on to whomever you think prudent.

The following applications and Internet activities will NOT function and/or may disrupt other attendee and exhibitor access:

  • Audio, Video, Data Streaming
  • Network Address Translation (NAT)
  • Net Meeting (inbound or outbound)
  • Inbound SNMP
  • Inbound Remote Control applications (Citrix, PC Anywhere, Remote Terminal Service, etc)
  • Routing Devices
  • Virtual Private Networks
  • Inbound FTP
  • Advanced Instant Messaging (such as whiteboard sharing)

Strategic Plan Implementation Reports Now Available

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

From ACRL:

In May, the leaders of the sections, chapters, and division-level committees reported the activities and programs that their unit carried out from September 2008 through May 2009 in support of the ACRL Strategic Plan 2020. This year, 11 committees, 14 sections, 1 interest group, and 29 chapters completed the report. The sections and interest group reports are now posted in the Communities of Practice Assembly community in ALA Connect at http://connect.ala.org/node/76789. This report should be shared with your leadership teams and distributed to your membership.

WiFi Availability at Annual Conference

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Announced recently by ALA Executive Director Keith Michael Fiels:

First the good news: Free WiFi will be available in meeting rooms throughout the convention center, and funds have been made available to prototype a recommendation of the electronic participation task force. Wireless access will also be provided for committee and board meeting rooms, selected conference hotels and/or meeting rooms and the convention center, enabling members to utilize laptop computer applications to provide for remote participation by board and committee members not able to attend.

Now the bad news: The cost of providing wireless in the meeting rooms at the four major conference hotels would be $270,000, which ALA simply cannot afford.

Many ALA members have been pressing for WiFi to enable people who are unable to attend ALA conference to participate virtually, but Fiels said providing internet access at hotel prices “is not sustainable as a model.” ALA will continue to investigate and negotiate for future conferences.

Gaming, Film, and Ephemera: Women’s Studies and Academic Collections
Monday, July 13, 2009
8:00-8:30: WSS Awards Presentation
8:30-12:00: WSS Program
Location: McCormick Place West W-192b

The panel will address mixed archival collections at the Schlesinger Library, the UIUC Gaming collection, and experiences conducting research on African American women and film. This program will address collection management and research strategies related to popular culture collections in academic libraries. Many collections directly relate to the history of women, gender, and culture, but they involve complex issues of access and preservation. Speakers will consider questions of how academic institutions collect and maintain these materials, as well as the experience of how researchers access and use them in scholarship.
