Feedback requested: WSS Newsletter

Friday, June 26th, 2009

The ACRL Budget and Finance Committee (B&F) has asked individual Sections to consider the following:
“…whether a printed section newsletter is still vital to your section membership. The B &F realize that a number of the sections are already making the newsletter available electronically. One suggestion to trim the budget was to ask sections if having a print fall newsletter and then transitioning to an electronic newsletter in the spring would support section members. Printing and mailing only one newsletter each would save the association about $12,600. “

Please post comments, questions, concerns on this proposal here, or via the WSS-L listserv. We have long published the newsletter electronically as well as in print, but now is our opportunity to provide feedback to the B&F Committee about this issue.

WiFi at McCormick Place

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

From ALA:

ALA is paying for WiFi at McCormick Place during the ALA Conference. So it will be available at no charge in the public areas and meeting rooms in the building and the Hyatt Conference Center (not complimentary at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place Hotel, however).

As WiFi systems are not as reliable as wired we received this message from the building you might want to pass on to whomever you think prudent.

The following applications and Internet activities will NOT function and/or may disrupt other attendee and exhibitor access:

  • Audio, Video, Data Streaming
  • Network Address Translation (NAT)
  • Net Meeting (inbound or outbound)
  • Inbound SNMP
  • Inbound Remote Control applications (Citrix, PC Anywhere, Remote Terminal Service, etc)
  • Routing Devices
  • Virtual Private Networks
  • Inbound FTP
  • Advanced Instant Messaging (such as whiteboard sharing)
